GA01 MUSIC IMPROVISATION FOR TEENS*

GA01 Music Improvisation for Teens

Open to all players 8+ years of age, of an intermediate standard and above, who want to start music improvisation and composition or accelerate their progress further.

Open to all instruments including voice.

Description: This is an opportunity for small group classes of students to get intensive (and fun), experience in making their own music through improvisation and composition - and no previous improvisation or composition experience necessary! It is structured to allow you to explore your own musical areas of interest in a respectful and imaginative space, and to find your own musical “voice”.

Learn how to improvise and compose your own music, solo, with friends or in bands and ensembles. We touch on many styles including classical music, rock, pop, blues and folk/world music sounds and styles. If you have always wanted to make your own music, write songs, improvise, compose music, be able to jam or play in a band, this course will give you a lot of positive experience and helpful tips and approaches you can use for the rest of your life. Being able to join in and play with other students and musicians of any musical background or style without needing music stands or pieces of paper for the notes, is a great freedom to give yourself. No need to learn another instrument to join in, the instrument you can already play is perfect!
Bring your instrument, a drink bottle, pen and note pad.

Description: In this course you learn how to refine and shape the ideas in your songwriting to be true to your inspiration, and to craft the mood via the arrangement to reflect the real spirit of the story you want to share with your audience. You will explore a number of approaches which will add experience and depth for your musical palette regarding the metre, chords and changes for you to draw on. As importantly you will learn how, at will, to always be in the space where everything just flows (“in the zone”) for your writing, not leaving inspiration as a haphazard thing which sometimes happens. We will be examining some existing songs from history, but most importantly focusing on your own ideas and writing, so that you come away at the end of the course with your own inspired body of work.
